TIP TWO:CAPTURING RANDOM, WAYWARD THOUGHTS AND INSPIRATIONS

Create a paper folder called “random.” This folder is for random thoughts and scribbling. I highly, highly recommend this. There you are, cranking up the creativity on your book, and you are writing, and Bam! Out of the blue you get an idea for your day job, or an idea for another book, or for how to do something differently in your household. Maybe something you want to say to your spouse pops into your head. Great! There are several ways to handle these random ideas. Suppressing them, not a good idea. That creates panic. Not fun. Are you going into a panic? Breathe. Getting your thoughts on paper is a good remedy for your panic.

Feeling as if ideas are fighting for your attention? I hear you.

Take a moment to remember who’s the boss. You are. And remember what your current writing project is all about. Got that? Okay.

Now here’s what you do with your wonderfully sparkling creativity. Write. It. Down. It will take only a few minutes.

I write random thoughts and inspirations in the margin of my journal, so I won’t forget them. Somehow, the act of writing keeps them in my mind. If the interrupting idea is a work “to-do,” I put it in my agenda right away. I don’t spend time so much on how or where it goes, I just put it at the top of that week’s page. If you have an idea for another book or another topic that is not the same as the one you are working on, create a folder for it in your computer or have a folder in your filing cabinet that says, “New Story Ideas.” I also have a place in my journal where I just write New Story Ideas! and I underline it. It’s not so important to me that it gets put somewhere official, just that it gets written down. I have a belief that the story that is calling for you to write itself will be calling the loudest. I probably have at least 100+ story ideas floating out there. But I’m very mindful to choose the idea that is the most exciting to me, the most vibrant and the most juicy to work on in the present moment. If that wonderful idea is meant to be, and you are meant to develop it, and it’s a different idea than the one you are working on right now, you know what? It will come back to you. This I believe. I trust in each of our own innate creativity to pick the juiciest idea for the moment, the one that makes us most excited. This is because at this point you are writing this book for you, for no one else but you.

By reflecting on the teachings of Stage 4, by spending some time thinking about your support team and who’s around you, you can then make some decisions.
